The Sonoma line

The county, area by area

Each area has its own page with drive times, drop-offs and the rides people book there. Minutes are from San Francisco, direct.

Sonoma Valley

~1 h

The plaza, the mission, and Highway 12 running north through Glen Ellen and Kenwood. The closest tasting rooms to the city, and the easiest half day.

Car service to Sonoma Valley

Petaluma

~50 min

A river town with a working downtown, and the wind-cooled Pinot Noir and Syrah of the Petaluma Gap around it. The first stop on US 101.

Car service to Petaluma

Santa Rosa

~1 h 10

The county seat and the hub of the roads: most routes north and west pass through it, and so does the airport. Hotels here put every valley within half an hour.

Car service to Santa Rosa

Russian River Valley

~1 h 15

Fog in the morning, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay by noon. Sebastopol, Forestville and Guerneville, with Westside Road and River Road as the two wine roads.

Healdsburg

The plaza town in the north with three valleys around it: Zinfandel in Dry Creek, Cabernet in Alexander Valley, and tasting rooms you can walk between after the car drops you.

Car service to Healdsburg

Sonoma Coast

~1 h 30

Vineyards on the ridges above the Pacific, Bodega Bay and Jenner below. Long, winding drives, and the strongest case for someone else at the wheel.

How it drives

One scenic road, one fast one

Highway 12

The Sonoma Highway: from Carneros through Sonoma, Glen Ellen and Kenwood into Santa Rosa. Two lanes, vineyards on both sides, and the way in from the city when the view matters more than the clock.

US 101

The freeway up the middle of the county: Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Windsor, Healdsburg. Your driver uses it to jump between valleys, and to get you back to the city after dinner.
